In the early days of our nonprofit, every dollar felt like a lifeline — and some days, we had only one or two of those lifelines to hold onto.
I remember staring at our tiny budget sheet, whispering to myself: How do we turn this into something real? How do we stretch these few coins into classrooms, into supplies, into hope?
Because these weren’t just numbers on a page. They were children waiting for a chance to learn. They were families quietly hoping someone would stand with them.
That’s when a truth hit me with unusual clarity: in this work, money isn’t just money. It’s trust. It’s sacrifice. It’s someone’s belief — handed over in the form of a check, a handful of change, or a small online gift.
And if someone believes in us enough to give, then we must honor that gift with everything we have.
Why Every Dollar Felt Like Gold
That doesn’t mean we’ve “arrived,” or that we’ve outgrown the challenges of scarcity.
Far from it.
Our work is still fragile. Our budget is still painfully small. But those early struggles shaped us. They taught us lessons about resilience, about adapting, about finding a way forward when the road is rough and the odds feel impossible.
Because in the end, transparency isn’t just a practice — it’s the bridge between sacrifice and trust, and the foundation for everything still to come.
Almost as soon as we officially began, expenses seemed to double overnight. Small costs piled up faster than we had planned, eating into the little we had put aside to fuel our bigger goals.
A few dollars here, a few there — and suddenly our dreams for classrooms and supplies shrank under the weight of daily trade-offs.
Do we buy chalkboards or the textbooks we promised? Do we spend precious fuel visiting families, or save it for printing learning materials?
Each decision was a choice between good and good. And each mistake felt costly — not to us, but to the children waiting on the other side of those decisions.
Setbacks That Stung
Sometimes the hardest challenges weren’t about supplies at all. They came in the form of broken promises or support that never arrived.
Other times, partners agreed to one thing but delivered another. Each moment tested our resolve.
But through it all, the only option was to keep going — to “keep on keeping on.”
I’ll never forget one afternoon when we secured a small box of donated supplies. It wasn’t much — just a handful of notebooks and a few pencils. Yet when we placed them in the hands of eager children, it felt like gold.
Their smiles reminded us why we counted every single item, distributed them with almost sacred care, and stretched each bit as far as it would go.
Frugality wasn’t just discipline. It became our compass.
When Necessity Became Our Teacher

That day, I learned a truth that has never left me. Scarcity, not abundance, became our greatest teacher.

In those fragile early days, the seeds of transparency were planted — not because it looked good in a proposal, but because it was the only way forward.
We didn’t just commit to transparency in writing; we lived it.
If we couldn’t stretch every coin until it sang, we had no right asking anyone to trust us with their generosity.
Before inviting others to believe in us, we had to prove — to ourselves first — that every coin could ripple outward into change.
Scarcity Reshaped Our Identity
Scarcity forced us to rethink everything:
- our systems
- our values
- our very identity
None of it came from someone else’s blueprint. It was forged in the fire of necessity, shaped by the realities on the ground.
The Fragile Crossroads
At one point, things were so uncertain that I had to borrow money from friends — just to buy a plane ticket back to Canada.
Our local fundraising efforts had faltered. Even I could barely survive.
Landing in Toronto, I realized I couldn’t find work fast enough to sustain what we had started. So I moved again — this time to Mississauga — where opportunities were more within reach.
Holding Two Worlds Together
Through it all, one thought guided me:
We must not lose the momentum we had begun.
Our nonprofit had sparked hope — practical, tangible, already touching lives. That hope could not be left to fade into silence.
So I worked. And I sent money back to Uganda — keeping our services alive while holding together two worlds at once.
Responsibility carries weight, and in those days, we felt every ounce of it.
A Story for Another Day
Maybe in a future post, I’ll share more about this unusual chapter — how I lived in one country while keeping our work alive in another, and what that tension taught me about leadership and sacrifice.
The Turning Point: Transparency Became Our Lifeline
Those early struggles gave us a wake-up call: survival wasn’t just about finding money; it was about earning trust.
At the time, almost nothing was coming in — neither locally nor internationally. I even tried social media ads, only to watch them drain what little we had.
Every single dollar had to stretch.
And if we were asking people to stand with us, we couldn’t rely on vague promises. We had to prove impact — clearly, consistently, and in real time.
That’s when it hit us: transparency couldn’t be a footnote. It had to be the heartbeat of our work. So we built systems to make it tangible.
Systems That Turn Values Into Action
When people hear the word “system,” they imagine something complex, like an architectural maze.
Ours is simple — and it still guides everything we do today.
Here’s what it looks like in practice:

- Regular updates: We don’t disappear after a donation. Supporters receive stories, photos, and progress reports.
- Lean operations: We run with minimal overhead, keeping the focus on children, not admin.
- Stretching every dollar: Even a small amount has big impact. One textbook can serve many children. One uniform opens the school gate with dignity. Nothing goes to waste.

At the heart of everything we do, the lesson remains clear:

Real accountability means ensuring what we set out to do is not only achieved but also measured, tracked, and learned from.
